1. Measure it. Don’t describe it.
“Our data is fine” or “it’s getting better” means nothing managerially — you can’t audit it and you can’t compare it. Define metrics based on your business, its impact and its risk.
Start with these three basics.
- Accuracy — system inventory versus physical stock count. What’s the variance?
- Consistency — is the same data point identical across systems?
- Timeliness — is the data available when the decision is made, or after?
What gets measured gets improved. As long as data quality is an adjective rather than a number, nobody owns it.
2. Bad data isn’t just a reconciliation difference
A small variance in a financial statement looks harmless — until it drives a big decision. Over-ordering from wrong stock data. Mispricing from incomplete costs. Shutting a production line on margin figures that were misallocated in the first place.
Every business decision is only as good as the data behind it. That is not an accounting problem — it is an enterprise risk.
3. We’re not looking for someone to blame
The question is not “who broke this” but “who owns this dataset” — a named, contactable owner for each one.
Knowing who owns the data means fixing the root cause once, instead of patching the same symptom every month. Organisations without data owners spend the close chasing where a number came from, rather than analysing what it means.
One question before investing in advanced analytics
Ask yourself: “Can we measure our data quality in numbers today?” If not, that’s where your transformation should start — not with platform selection.
